Influencer: Scott Stratten

Scott Stratten

I love it when you meet someone and can feel their passion just pouring out of them. The thing that strikes me about Scott Stratten is that he is totally and completely committed to practicing what he preaches. He’s got a brilliant business mind and has built his company UnMarketing around the values of authenticity and commitment to investing in relationships.

While on his book tour, Scott stopped in Detroit and I had a chance to catch up with him. As with all the other people I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing for this Influencers Series, I asked him to tell me about something he’s passionate about that most people might not obviously associate with him.

Maybe he was feeling inspired by his time in the D, abut he talked about his love for the Detroit Lions and the amount of passion he feels in the city of Detroit. He was first drawn to the Lions when Barry Sanders started playing and got hooked on watching an athlete so committed to excellence. As he’s gotten to know the people investing time and energy into creating a better next chapter for Detroit, he became inspired by what he’s found in the city’s people.

A big part of what Scott does with UnMarketing is show people how to do better business by simply committing to excellence in all they do. Excellent products and services. Excellent communication. Excellent customer service. Focusing hard on just being awesome. Check out our conversation.

Many people know Scott from the many connections he’s made via Twitter. But he’s a lot more than a guy with a BlackBerry attached to his thumbs at all times. He’s a great speaker, a great author, a semi-professional karaoke singer and just an all around awesome guy. He’s taught me a lot about business and relationships and I think I speak for a lot of people when I say I’m excited to see what he does next.

I highly recommend his book. Say hi to him on twitter. Make it out to an event he’s speaking at if you can. Give him a hug, handshake, high five or a compliment on his dimples. If it seems awkward, tell him I sent you. Extra points if you catch him in public wearing the hot pink sunglasses with rhinestones in the video.

Karl, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, Scott is a really cool guy. I’ve learned a ton from the things he writes, speaks about and otherwise shares. He’s a smart, level-headed guy and I respect him a lot.

Jeff Pulver helped me realize the power and beauty in the connections we make, and how everyday brings promise and opportunity. This whole idea of building relationships, creating community, and engaging others is where Twitter really has the most influence. I have Scott Stratten to thank for his ideas and inspiration…AND…he has great things to say about Detroit.  [...]
