Great post Becky! I am a third year Aerospace Engineering student at an accredited university. I agree with everything from your post. I always believed in all the things mentioned in the post and my path has been that for my entire life not just in college. This particular post and the comments behind it can confirm that my path is not wrong.

In my opinion, life is really about how you use what you learn rather than just learning, specially college life. Along with working hard in my Aerospace Engineering courses, I have also been part of several student organizations. In fact, I've worked my way towards being a team lead for the Design, Build & Fly team. We compete every year in competitions held in Arizona, Kansas. This team has a history of always being in top 5. As you can imagine, how difficult and fun it is to lead a team where failure is not an option.
In fact, we use all the knowledge learned in our college courses in this team. A lot of times even more than what we learn in college courses.

In my opinion, GPA is just a number. Working in student organizations, internships, coops is evidence of how you make use of your education. And I think that applying what you learn is more important than what you learn. In short, in my opinion the way you want to look at this situation is that GPA just takes one line on your resume which is just a number as mentioned before. Experiences consume more space and are excellent qualitative analysis of your career. For instance, if you look at someone's resume, you just look at their GPA for a few seconds. But you spend much more time reading what's mentioned in skills, experiences. In the end it all boils down to where to focus more, the statement that is read for a few seconds or the statement that is read for hours at times.

Great Post,
Hersh

Hi, Thank you for this article.
I'm an adult with long working experiance, now I have scholarship from my government and studing undergrad as Int'l student. I have been working in different kind of work, however, my last research paper in ENG121 was about this subject. Questions I came up with,
Is it 1 of 2 to chose from? I can't have best of both world! Why the workforce in the US. complaining the higher education do not equips students with required skills?

In my opinion is some campuses are not maintained regularly based on real world changes, and student leadership standard.
For example, I'm an intl student, but there is not much interest to gather American students with other nationalities.
Thank you,

Hi, I am Lily DengZi from China.
I am a college year one student and I major in Finance. Studying the U.S. editon textbooks in UIC（Beijing Normal University-Hongkong Bapist Univeristy's United International College ), I can feel the stressful atmosphere of fighting for a higher GPA from most of my schoolmates.

A thought crowed in my mind after reading the article and comments. That is to be a more active learner in academic aspect, which will be assoicated with improvement of time-mangement, presentation skills, writing skills, and methods of learning new things. To find intership opporunities and prticipate in student association after sometime are things need to plan as well.

Just really apreaciate the meaningful article and so many comments of various angles that bordern my horizon. Additonally, a number of my schoolmates had get the information from blogs and onlinesocial networking ways and I will transfer the educational advice to more of my classmates and friends in different majors.

Thank you for reading!
